Competition First Try

Overview

I designed and built this helium driven vehicle with three other amazing classmates for the 2.00 Introduction to Design Class. It was a super fun project and even though it might not seem so, it required a lot of creativity, teamwork, and organization because we only had 2 weeks to come up with ideas, discuss them, design the product and make prototypes to finally present it in the competition.

Goal

To design, build, and demonstrate a device that will successfully deposit the Pokéball (a helium-filled balloon) into either of the two compartments of the Pokébox (two 18” square boxes open at one end stacked on top of each other that are 10' away from starting point).

Lessons Learned

  • Prototyping techniques.

  • Skills to decide as a group which is the best design (or how to combine different ideas to make one great product).

  • Organization and time management.

  • Design with constraints (tools and materials) and under time pressure.

  • Creative thinking process to avoid making a product that would be similar to what the other groups would come up with (this was one of the hardest obstacles we had to overcome).
